  • The companies will work together to transform industrial facilities that rely on fossil fuel-based cogeneration systems towards lower-carbon, more competitive energy models.
  • The collaboration will drive the development of renewable gases, from converting biogas plants to biomethane to producing e-fuels through the recovery of biogenic CO₂.
  • Through ‘Moeve decarbonize’, the company strengthens its portfolio of solutions for industry and other B2B customers, incorporating ENSO’s expertise in bioenergy, cogeneration and renewable thermal generation.
  • The initiative reflects a shared vision that decarbonisation is a key driver of competitiveness, capable of generating savings and sustainable investment.

Moeve and ENSO, a group specialising in the development of renewable energy solutions from biomass, have reached an agreement to drive industrial decarbonisation by developing energy alternatives that enable the progressive replacement of fossil fuels.

In doing so, they will offer alternatives for energy-intensive industrial processes in sectors such as chemicals, paper and board, and food and beverages. These sectors are characterised by high demand for steam and thermal energy and currently rely on generation systems fuelled by coal, natural gas and other fossil fuels.

As well as transforming these facilities towards advanced biomass-based models, the alliance also opens up new opportunities in the development of renewable gases: from converting biogas plants to biomethane to the potential development of e-fuels (RFNBOs) using the biogenic CO₂ generated at bioenergy facilities. Capturing and recovering this CO₂ makes it possible to turn it into a new raw material. In this area, Moeve may act as a potential offtaker of the new green molecules produced, complementing ENSO’s capabilities in renewable generation and biogenic carbon capture.

ENSO already has experience of this technological integration at its Garray bioelectric plant (Soria), the first bioelectric plant in Spain to integrate a system for capturing and recovering 100% renewable food-grade CO₂.

An alliance to boost industrial competitiveness

Both companies aim to support industrial businesses in transforming their energy systems through projects designed to generate savings, cut emissions and increase energy security, while also facilitating the investment needed to make them happen.

Elías Hernández, CEO of ENSO, said: “Industry needs solutions that allow it to make progress on decarbonisation while increasing its competitiveness. We believe both can and should be part of the same equation. Our ability to invest in, build and operate large bioenergy infrastructure, combined with Moeve’s capabilities and reach, will allow us to turn decarbonisation opportunities into real projects that generate savings and long-term value for our customers.”

Carlos Aguilera, Head of Business Development at Moeve decarbonize, added: “This agreement allows us to keep advancing green molecules as a real solution for decarbonising energy-intensive sectors. Through our ‘Moeve decarbonize’ offering, and drawing on ENSO’s strong track record, we will offer our industrial customers a broader range of energy solutions, combining heat, electricity and renewable gases in processes where electrification is not always viable.”

Decarbonising to improve industrial competitiveness

This alliance combines ENSO’s experience in the development, financing, construction and operation of bioenergy projects with Moeve’s capabilities in energy supply and in the development and marketing of green molecules.

The collaboration reflects the shared view of both organisations that competitiveness and decarbonisation go hand in hand in industrial development. The energy transformation requires significant investment, but it also represents an opportunity to modernise industrial assets, reduce exposure to energy market volatility and improve long-term production costs.

This model makes it possible to tackle large-scale, complex energy projects and enables industrial companies to invest in efficiency and sustainability without diverting resources from their core business, even exploring co-investment models in assets that accelerate the transition.

The agreement also comes at an important moment for cogeneration in Spain, with upcoming auctions planned for this technology. This new investment cycle could represent an opportunity for many industrial companies to renew their generation systems and move towards more efficient solutions with a lower carbon footprint.

With this alliance, Moeve and ENSO reinforce their commitment to the energy transformation of industry through concrete, financeable solutions tailored to the needs of each facility, particularly in processes where high thermal demand makes replacing fossil fuels more complex.
