Enso, a leading renewable energy group specialized in bioenergy, has signed an agreement with García-Carrión, Europe’s largest winery and the fourth largest in the world, for the construction of a biomass plant to supply thermal energy under the ESE model (Energy Service Company). This project marks an important milestone in industrial sustainability and circular economy, as it valorizes part of the agricultural residues generated at García-Carrión’s Don Simón plant in Huelva and produces 100% renewable energy for its production processes through a transversal approach covering the company’s entire value chain.
The thermal generation project under the Energy Service Company (ESE) model is being developed by BIOVI, a company within the ENSO group, and financed by FEDER Funds under File No. FDTERAND-CI-2020-000067. The project will cover 100% of the thermal demand of García-Carrión’s production processes at the Don Simón plant in Huelva and involves the launch of a biomass plant by the end of the first half of 2023.
Industrial Sustainability and Circular Economy
Through the ESE model, Enso provides García-Carrión with a solution aligned with its decarbonization plan, replacing traditional natural gas boilers with biomass boilers. In this way, Enso becomes not only the supplier of thermal energy but also a provider of solutions in energy efficiency and decarbonization for these facilities.
The construction, taking place at the Don Simón plant (Villanueva de los Castillejos, Huelva), is expected to last approximately eight months, with commissioning planned for the end of the first half of 2023. The facility will generate over 50,000 tons of saturated steam annually from biomass. Additionally, it will contribute to more sustainable production by avoiding over 8,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year.
ENSO Committed to Industrial Decarbonization in Spain
The plant will consume around 10,000 tons of biomass annually. Enso will cover 100% of the plant’s industrial thermal demand using fully sustainable biomass under the SURE certification scheme, which ensures compliance with all requirements established by EU Directive 2018/2001 on Renewable Energy and Royal Decree 376/2022, which regulates sustainability criteria and greenhouse gas emission reduction for biofuels, bioliquids, and biomass fuels.
The partnership between Enso and García-Carrión stems from both groups’ commitment to industrial decarbonization and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. In line with García-Carrión’s 360º sustainability strategy, this collaboration strengthens the company’s circular economy initiatives and carbon footprint reduction at its Huelva plant, recognized globally for its technological and sustainable development.
The project is developed by BIOTÉRMICA VILLANUEVA SL (BIOVI), part of the ENSO group, under the Low-Carbon Economy Projects funding line, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) and managed by IDAE, aiming to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable economy.
