What do we do in the biomass supply phase?

Definition of the supply strategy

Once a thorough energy-technical analysis of the client’s industrial process has been carried out —with the aim of determining the operational conditions that the biomass thermal generation system must meet— we define a supply strategy that guarantees compliance with sustainability criteria. From this data we size the annual and seasonal volume of biofuel required, specifying the technical parameters the biomass must meet (PCI/LHV, moisture, particle size distribution, ash content, chlorides, among others). We assess the availability of locally sourced biomass, both from forest resources (wood chip, bark, industrial wood) and from agricultural residues or agro-industrial by-products, prioritizing traceability, continuity of supply and economic competitiveness. This analysis makes it possible to establish the optimal biomass types, the delivery logistics (volume per shift, frequency, vehicle type), on-site storage needs, and the contractual conditions associated with a renewable resource-based energy supply.

Evaluation based on deep expertise in the agricultural and forestry sectors

At ENSO, we define our supply strategies under strict criteria of sustainability, traceability, and regulatory compliance, prioritizing the use of locally sourced biomass that meets both the client’s energy needs and the project’s environmental commitments. We select only biomass from local sources —including sustainably managed forest resources, controlled agricultural residues, and by-products generated by agri-food industries— in order to minimize logistical impact and strengthen the circular economy within the region. At ENSO, we directly manage biomass supply, overseeing the entire value chain from the source. We work in collaboration with municipalities, public entities, and private landowners to carry out the sustainable extraction of biomass from local forests and lands. This direct management approach, combined with our expertise in the forestry and agricultural sectors, enables us to guarantee long-term availability, stabilize costs, and adapt the resource to the technical requirements of each plant.

Characterization and quality control of the biofuel

The thermal efficiency, operational stability, and service life of a facility largely depend on the quality of the biofuel used. For this reason, at ENSO we apply a comprehensive quality control system, through which each biomass batch undergoes rigorous technical characterization before delivery and use at the plant. Our technical teams analyze critical parameters such as moisture content, lower heating value (LHV), particle size distribution, ash and chloride content, as well as bulk density and fines content —all of which directly affect the fuel’s behavior in the boiler, combustion efficiency, and the formation of slag or emissions. These controls are carried out both at the source (storage or logistics centers) and at the destination (client’s plant), using certified instruments and standardized procedures.

Logistics and on-site delivery

We design and implement comprehensive logistical solutions tailored to the specific needs of each industrial client, taking into account geographic location, required volume, and consumption frequency. We operate a dedicated network of intermediate depots and regional logistics centers that serve as strategic storage hubs. These sites allow us to maintain a stabilized and classified biomass stock close to the point of consumption, reducing direct dependence on extraction cycles and ensuring supply continuity even in periods of high seasonal demand or unforeseen disruptions. Our contingency plans are defined in advance, guaranteeing the client’s energy coverage at all times.

Supply is not static. At ENSO, we adjust the frequency, quantity, and characteristics of the biofuel according to the evolution of the client’s thermal consumption, taking into account production, seasonal, or maintenance variations.
