The history of ENSO is a story of transformation: that of a group of professionals and companies who, for more than two decades, have led the development of sustainable energy solutions based on biomass and clean technologies.
Standard Kessel
The origins of the ENSO team date back to the year 2000, with the experience gained at Standard Kessel, a German company specialized in the design and manufacture of industrial boilers. It was there that the team consolidated its initial knowledge in biomass combustion technologies and steam generation for energy applications, which later served as the technical foundation for the development of ENSO’s own projects.
Biomass Combustion Engineering
In 2002, Biomass Combustion Engineering was founded, a pioneering company applying expertise in boiler engineering and combustion to the design of biomass facilities. During this period, innovative solutions were developed that paved the way in the Iberian bioenergy market and laid the foundation for new sustainable energy projects.
Gestamp Biomass Solution
With the creation of Gestamp Biomass Solutions in 2009, the business project took a step forward by integrating into an international group with investment capacity and global reach. This new phase allowed for the expansion of the service portfolio and the undertaking of larger-scale projects, with an industrial and corporate focus.
Gestamp Biomass Solutions Established through the Acquisition of Standard Biomass Services
In 2012, with the acquisition of Standard Biomass Services, the structure of Gestamp Biomass Solutions was consolidated, strengthening its technical and service offerings. This integration allowed for the combination of design, construction, operation, and maintenance, providing complete solutions throughout the entire lifecycle of biomass plants.
Garray Bioelectric Plant Begins Operation
That same year, the 16 MW Garray Bioelectric Plant (Soria) was inaugurated, an emblematic project that positioned the company as a reference in the sector. The plant, based on local forest and agricultural biomass, became an example of sustainable territorial management and the creation of added value in the rural environment.
Viseu and Fundão Plants Begin Operation (Portugal)
In 2019, the biomass plants in Viseu and Fundão, Portugal, began operations, adding more than 30 MW of installed capacity. These facilities consolidated the company’s presence in the Iberian Peninsula and demonstrated the team’s ability to replicate its model across different industrial environments.
The Team Merges into Gestamp Biomass Services and ENSO Global Energy Solutions is Created
In 2020, after years of experience accumulated across various companies and projects, the team converged at Gestamp Biomass Services. That same year, a corporate transformation took place with the creation of ENSO Global Energy Solutions, an independent company focused on leading industrial decarbonization in Iberia.
ENSO Acquired by Tikehau Investment Management
In 2021, ENSO was acquired by the private equity fund Tikehau Investment Management, specialized in investments related to the energy transition in Europe. This financial backing marked a milestone in consolidating the company’s growth and accelerating the development of new projects in the industrial sector.
Biotérmica Villanueva de los Castillejos Plant (BIOVI, Huelva) Begins Operation
In 2023, the first BIOVI plant in Villanueva de los Castillejos (Huelva) became operational. The project was designed to supply renewable thermal energy to agro-industrial processes, integrating an innovative energy services model and contributing to the decarbonization of sectors with high heat demand.
Second BIOVI Plant Begins Operation in Jumilla (Murcia)
In 2024, the second BIOVI plant in Jumilla (Murcia) began operations, also under the energy services model. This project consolidated ENSO’s strategy of providing turnkey solutions and long-term supply contracts, combining reliability, competitiveness, and emissions reduction.
ENSO Acquired by Igneo Infrastructure Partners
In 2025, Igneo Infrastructure Partners, the infrastructure investment arm of First Sentier Investors, acquired ENSO. This move positioned the company within an international platform of sustainable assets, strengthening its expansion capacity and its role as a key player in the European energy transition.
Until November 2024, ENSO was 100% part of T2 Energy Transition Fund, an investment fund specialized in the energy transition, created through the partnership between Tikehau Capital and Total SA.
This structure allowed the consolidation of a unique business model focused on industrial decarbonization through advanced bioenergy, and propelled ENSO’s growth as a reference player in Spain and other key markets. T2 Fund invested in companies capable of leading the energy transition from within the value chain, providing concrete, traceable, and sustainable solutions.
In December 2024, Igneo Infrastructure Partners, the global long-term infrastructure investment platform of First Sentier Investors, formalized the acquisition of 100% of ENSO Group.
This transaction reaffirmed ENSO’s strategic value in the industrial decarbonization process in Spain, not only due to its technical and operational expertise, but also because of its integrated model for the development, operation, and supply of renewable energy through biomass.
Igneo’s entry marks the beginning of a new phase for ENSO, strengthening its capacity for growth, internationalization, and innovation, while maintaining its commitment to the territory, sustainability, and technical excellence. Today, ENSO continues to evolve with a clear vision: to accelerate the real energy transition from industry and establish itself as the catalyst for renewable solutions addressing today’s challenges.

ENSO has extensive experience in the development and management of biomass energy generation projects at an international level. Our expertise covers reference plants in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America, including projects such as Burgess BioPower in New Hampshire (75 MWe), Mountain Iron in Minnesota (35 MWe), Pucallpa in Peru (30 MWe), and Arjowiggins in the United Kingdom (35 MWt).
This global experience has allowed us to consolidate deep technical and operational knowledge, capable of adapting to different regulatory, logistical, and cultural environments, while always ensuring efficiency, reliability, and sustainability.
